The third part of Marion Zimmer Bradley's The Mists of Avalon is set in the years after Arthur's coronation, and centres on the rivalry between the priestesses of Avalon and the rising Christian church. Gwenhwyfar holds a dangerous secret and uses it to bind Arthur to the church.
Vivian's attempt to confront Arthur about his betrayal of Avalon ends in tragedy, Morgaine arranges Lancelet's marriage, which sends Gwenhwyfar into a vow of revenge, and Morgaine marries Uriens of North Wales to advance Avalon's cause. The book ends with the introduction of the young Gwydion, who is Mordred.
