In 1963, an Oxford lecturer, Andrew Hale, receives a coded phone call that draws him back to the secret service he served during the war. The call concerns Operation Declare, an old and unfinished operation against supernatural beings on Mount Ararat, and Hale's part in a disaster there in 1948.
His path crosses those of the double agent Kim Philby and a woman from his past, while the events of the Great Game are revealed to have had a hidden purpose. Tim Powers's spy novel mixes real history with the supernatural and builds toward a showdown on the glaciers of Ararat.
