About this book
When the mercenary Col Istor takes the northern fortress of Tornor Keep and kills its lord, he spares the lord's young son Errel and the watch commander, Ryke. Ryke, who hates him, agrees to serve as his commander on one condition: that the boy is not harmed.
When the two flee with the Green Clan to a hidden land of peace, they find a way of life without war, rank or the division of men and women. The first book of the Chronicles of Tornor, and winner of the World Fantasy Award.
